“Ross is a delight to work with on set and in post. He has been sound recordist for several of my shorts and came on as sound designer for my latest. He is both meticulous and creative in his approach and I can always trust that I will have great sound on my films.”

More info

For Hoard I was responsible for the production audio, and providing sound design for specific elements in post-production.

A personal highlight in this project was working with actors Julia Bisby & Neil Sandland to develop methods for recording haunting ghostly voices, using contact microphones as well as a variety of boom and omnidirectional microphones. We work-shopped and recorded vocal improvisations on location, which I then worked into a variety of chilling vocal effects layers in the edit during post-production. This offers another example of the benefits I have experienced from the continuity of sound design work across production and post-production (of course with plenty of preparatory work in pre-production) — being able to explore and develop ideas on set with a specific mind towards post-production proved to be an invaluable creative approach for developing the ways in which the story of Hoard could be told through sound.
